"One victim was carrying a rifle. An argument started and both victims were assaulted. A suspect then chased one victim, displayed a handgun, and demanded the victim to drop the rifle. The victim complied and the two then fled the area, according to a Richmond Police spokesperson.

Stoney’s statement that he saw nothing criminal in the officer’s actions came before completion of a criminal investigation that he had called for publicly. The probe into the June 13 SUV incident is still ongoing, according to Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette McEachin, whom Stoney has tasked with reviewing the case and several other high-profile incidents related to the city’s civil unrest.

 The Richmond Police Department estimates that more than $1.5 million was spent on overtime, or roughly a third of what was allocated for this fiscal year, during a month-long span when protests erupted across the city. “The total overtime for the time period you requested was $1,838,577.79 of which $1,511,987.68 was related to the protests."

Richmond’s new police chief on Monday immediately quashed the idea of defunding his department — one of the loudest rallying cries that has emerged from the city’s recent civil unrest — but voiced support for other popular reforms.

“We should be seeking to fund the change that we are looking for,” Smith said Monday during a wide-ranging, sit-down interview with members of the local news media.

Ashe’s family had informed Mayor Levar Stoney in a letter that they would back a decision to temporarily relocate the memorial on Monument Avenue but a spokesperson for the mayor told 8News on Friday that after “subsequent conversations” with the family, they “now wish for it to remain in its current place.”
