Protesters demanding more actions from City Hall took to the
streets of Richmond during the middle of the city’s evening rushhour causing
traffic on East Broad Street to grind to a halt.
Several dozen protesters gathered at Martin Luther King
Middle School around 4:30 PM bringing along an entourage of cars and cyclists
to block traffic along their route to city hall. The largely peaceful group of
moved westbound along Broad Street before occupying the grounds of City Hall.
Arriving at the city’s government complex demonstrators
blocked several roads and enumerated a list of unmet demands including
defunding the Richmond Police Department. Several members of the crowd added
graffiti to the road declaring “ABOLISH POLICE! DEFUND RPD!” Media covering the
event were met with hostility from the crowd who attempted to block their
cameras and otherwise impede coverage of the event.
Around 6:45 PM the demonstrators departed City Hall and
returned to an eastward route taking them back to Moody Middle via the Leigh
Street viaduct.
Overall the demonstration maintained its peaceful nature with only a few heated interactions with city hall employees frustrated by the disruption to traffic on adjacent streets. No arrests were reported during this event and there were no notable confrontations between law enforcement and demonstrators.
