Black Lives Matter March On Brown's Island

Hundreds of demonstrators peacefully marched through downtown Richmond on the morning of Sunday May 31st. The march brought out a diverse group of participants ranging across an entire spectrum of ages.

The demonstration was planned in advance with organizers developing ideas for the event during the middle of the previous week well before the chaos of the prior two nights erupted in Richmond. This Sunday morning event was a decidedly different tone with demonstrators peacefully participating and law enforcement offering logistical support to organizers.

The march originated on Brown’s Island and traveled north along 5th Street to Broad and eventually reaching their destination at the state capitol. Police escorts provided road blocks for the march to safely transit the city streets.

By 11 AM demonstrators reached capitol square and confronted capitol police guarding the barricaded entrance. Despite the tense atmosphere the demonstrations moved along peacefully and without incident heading east to the 17th Street Farmers Market.

Throughout the early afternoon demonstrators participated in and listened to speeches, sharing their frustrations and demanding action from policy makers and law enforcement. In the afternoon several elected officials including City Commponwealth's Attonrey Colette McEachin participated in the events at the 17th Street Farmers Market.
